Heavy Weights And Little Rest Between Sets For Building Muscle Mass While Losing Fat: A Follow-Up Report

Heavy Weights And Little Rest Between Sets For Building Muscle Mass While Losing Fat:  A Follow-Up Report

Dear Friend,

If you remember last week's tip, I talked about doing 6 sets of 6 reps per body part with only 30 seconds rest between sets.  Because of the low reps, you're still able to handle a relatively heavy weight, but still reap the benefits of resting very little between sets

After that tip, I heard from Dave Beseke, a subscriber, who had an interesting twist on that.  His routine makes a lot of sense and I DEFINITELY think it's worth trying.

Here's Dave's idea...

I've been using something similar to this and getting pretty good results. Instead of doing a straight 6x6, try alternating sets of 2 different exercises.  Here is a typical workout that I use:

 Series 1:

 Deadlifts/Weighted Chinups 6x6 45 sec rest

 Series 2:

Incline Hammer Curls/Weighted Chinups 6x6 45 sec rest

 Series 3:

Reverse Barbell Curls/Dumbbell Wrist Curls 6x6 45 sec rest

This workout is performed by doing the first exercise in the set, resting 45 seconds, doing the 2nd, resting 45, etc. until a 6 sets of each are completed.  You also only get 45 seconds rest when moving from 1 series to the next.

This method allows you to use heavier weights since you really get about a 90-120 second rest between sets of the same exercise, but you still get the benefits of only resting 45 seconds between each exercise.

The workout should take under 40 minutes to complete not counting warmups.

NOTE: the 12 sets of chinups in this workout are really 3 sets each of 4 different grip positions.

Try it - I think you'll find it to be better than what you are using now.

Dave Beseke

Thanks a lot, Dave.  I appreciate your contribution.  Keep 'em coming! It makes a lot of sense.  I know Charles Poliquin recommends workouts similar to this for fat loss.  It's definitely worth trying.  But be forewarned...it's not gonna be easy!  But then again, nothing worthwhile ever is...is it?
