SF reporters await fate for refusing to reveal steroid source
SAN FRANCISCO Two San Francisco Chronicle reporters should find out today if they'll be going to jail for refusing say who leaked then secret grand jury testimony from Barry Bonds and other elite athletes.
During a hearing this afternoon, () government lawyers will ask a judge to sentence Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada (FAYN'-uh-roo WAH'-duh) to 18 months for refusing to reveal their source, or sources.
The two reporters are seeking what are described in court documents as a "nominal monetary fine" and other punishment. Instead of being jailed for a year-and-a-half, they're hoping to serve their time under house arrest and do jail time on weekends.
The two reporters published a series of articles and a book based partly on transcripts of the testimony of Bonds, Jason Giambi and others before a grand jury investigating BALCO, the Burlingame-based nutritional supplement company that became the center of a steroid scandal two years ago.
