Others Got Steroids From Benoit Doc

Others Got Steroids From Benoit Doc, By: Valerie Hoff 7/14/2007 New developments Friday night in the murder-suicide involving professional wrestler Chris Benoit. Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, leading investigators to wonder if drugs played a role in the deaths, and it now appears that Benoit and several other professional wrestlers all saw the same doctor. Fayette County court documents showed four other wrestlers were at one time patients of Dr. Phil Astin, who has been indicted for improper prescribing of drugs. The search warrant from the June 27 raid of Astin's office indicated that investigators seized the medical records of Chris Benoit and his wife, as well as those of wrestlers Marcus "Buff" Bagwell, Mark Jindrak, Oscar Gutierrez, and Lex Luger. Last month, Luger told 11Alive that steroids and other drugs nearly cost him his life. He has since kicked the drugs and become a born-again Christian. Luger has said he would like to see tighter controls on prescription drugs, something Georgia Representative Ron Stephens tried for last session. He has said he will try again next session to establish a central database to track controlled substances, but told 11Alive that his bill remained stuck in the judiciary committee because of opposition from the ACLU. State investigators believe Chris Benoit filled steroid prescriptions at various pharmacies to avoid prescription, but under Stephens's bill, that would not have been possible, as the bill is intended to keep people from jumping from pharmacy to pharmacy. Toxicology tests on Benoit have not yet been completed, so it remains unknown if he was on steroids when he killed his wife and son, and then himself.
