NL Notes: Rose Jr. gets jail time for steroid sub

May 2, 2006, Seattle Times News

Pete Rose Jr., the son of baseball's career hits leader, was sentenced Monday to one month in prison and five months of home detention for distributing a steroid alternative to his minor-league teammates.

Rose faced up to two years in prison and a $1 million fine. Federal judge Robert Echols waived a fine for Rose.

"I made a mistake and hurt a lot of people," Rose said outside the courthouse after the sentencing. "The judge is great. He was very generous and I can't thank him enough. He doesn't have to worry about me doing anything like this again," Rose said.

Rose's attorney, Jeffrey Brodey, said his client will start his monthlong sentence June 5. Brodey said he will request that Rose be incarcerated in Cincinnati, where he lives with his pregnant wife and child.

The 36-year-old Rose pleaded guilty Nov. 7 to distributing the steroid alternative GBL, a drug he used as a sleep aid, to some of his teammates with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Rose played for the Class AA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds in 1997, 2001 and 2002.

Atlanta: Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria tied an Atlanta record when he extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a first-inning single against Colorado. Renteria's streak is the longest to start a season for the Braves since Felipe Alou hit safely in 16 straight at the beginning of 1966, the team's first year in Atlanta.

Chicago: The Cubs recalled Rich Hill from Class AAA Iowa and plan to start the left-hander Thursday in Arizona in place of Glendon Rusch. Rusch, a graduate of Shoreline's Shorecrest High, will move back to the bullpen, where he has pitched in parts of the last two seasons with the Cubs. "I feel like my stuff is as good as it's ever been," he said. "What's even more frustrating is when it becomes a situation where you're feeling great physically, but mentally I'm not focused in on making the proper pitches like I should be."

Colorado: 1B Todd Helton will begin a minor-league rehab assignment at Class AAA Colorado Springs today.

Florida: Rookie RHP Josh Johnson (1-2, 3.86 ERA) will make his first start of the season Thursday at Washington, bumping LHP Jason Vargas (1-1, 5.70) to the bullpen.

New York: RHP John Maine will be called up from AAA Norfolk to start tonight's game against the Nationals in place of the injured Brian Bannister.

Pittsburgh: Catcher Ryan Doumit will continue his rehab stint at AAA Indianapolis for three or four more days, manager Jim Tracy said. Doumit was originally expected to activated from the 15-day DL (strained left hamstring) on Monday.

St. Louis: 3B Scott Rolen is expected to rejoin the Cardinals for the start of a series in Houston on Wednesday. He stayed back in St. Louis for the two-game series in Cincinnati, recovering from a viral infection that has sidelined him for a week and caused him to lose weight
