Doctor charged in steroid case pleads not guilty

Doctor charged in steroid case pleads not guilty April 8, 2007 PROVIDENCE, R.I. A former New York doctor accused of illegally writing prescriptions for steroids and human growth hormone pleads not guilty in federal court in Providence. Ana Maria Santi is charged with conspiracy, health care fraud and illegal drug distribution. Prosecutors say Santi and another doctor wrote prescriptions for customers of American Pharmaceutical Group without ever meeting or examining them. They say Santi was also writing prescriptions even though her New York medical license was revoked. Santi's attorney says he hopes to resolve the case with a plea deal before she is sentenced next month in New York for similar allegations. The other doctor agreed to plead guilty as part of a plea deal. The owner of American Pharmaceutical Group has pleaded not guilty.
