Bill limits steroids, supplements
Bill limits steroids, supplements
February 7, 2007
Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, introduced a bill Wednesday intended to curb the use of steroids and performance-enhancing supplements by Oregon youth.
"I have been around sports most of my life and healthy competition is a part of growing up," Courtney said in a press release. "However competition can become unhealthy when winning becomes in obsession."
Senate Bill 517 would prohibit school district employees from endorsing, distributing or suggesting steroid or performance-enhancing supplements to students. It targets both illegal and legal substances. Similar legislation failed to pass in 2005.
This fall, New Jersey became the first state to require steroids testing for high school athletes. Random testing is limited to athletes playing on teams that reach post-season tournaments. [email protected]
