Two New York doctors allegedly conspired with the owner of a New Jersey pharmaceutical distribution company to distribute illegal steroids.
A federal grand jury in Rhode Island indicted Daniel McGlone of North Brunswick, N.J., owner of American Pharmaceutical Group; Ana Maria Santi of New York, owner of Omni Health Care; and Dr. Victor Mariani, also of New York, the Providence Journal reported.
Prosecutors say the three were involved in money laundering, healthcare fraud and conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and human-growth hormones.
About one-third of their customers were in Rhode Island, prosecutors said.
McGlone allegedly advertised in bodybuilding magazines and on the Web, providing advice about drugs even though he had no medical or pharmacist license. Santi, who lost her license to practice in 1999, allegedly forged a retired doctor's name on prescriptions.
Prosecutors are seeking more than $900,000 from McGlone, $35,000 from Mariani and $25,000 from Santi.
