TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey's school athletic association says just one in 500 high student athletes screened for steroids tested positive for the performance enhancers.
The Garden State is the first in the nation to mandate that student athletes be tested when teams make state playoffs.
Those who test positive can't play sports for a year. Seniors who capture individual awards or championships are forced to return them.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association results show athletes were tested in 12 sports following championship games.
Parents and athletes said the testing often kept them from celebrating championships or boarding their buses and leaving if they had lost.
