Boderland Schools Not Ready To Test For Steroids Yet
July 18, 2007
The Texas legislature passed a bill last session requiring all Texas schools to test for steroid use among high school athletes. The Soccoro Independent School District starts school on Thursday, but the testing policy is not ready yet.
KFOX contacted the Soccoro, Ysleta and El Paso independent school districts to see what the policy was on testing. All of them said they do not have any testing in place right now and are awaiting requirements from the state as to how exactly to proceed.
Berenice Zubia of the Ysleta independent school district said there are a lot of questions.
”Of course you want to test across the board for everyone but for some the season does not start until later. Are you going to do it two to three times a year? Who will monitor the results?"
She said it is a good thing to have the topic of steroids on students' minds but as of the beginning of this school year, the details are not clear as to who will pay for the testing and how complete the tests should be.
“They really need to focus on what exactly they want for us to require," Zubia said.
Until then, she said coaches keep a close eye on students to make sure steroids stay out of their schools.
