Lightweight Kit Cope tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid Boldenone following his technical knockout loss to Rob McCullough in Las Vegas last weekend, Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer confirmed to Sherdog.com Thursday afternoon.
The pair of 155-pound fighters headlined the first Zuffa-promoted World Extreme Cagefighting card at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Jan. 20. Cope, 29, has experienced a tough transition from Thai boxing, where he was a champion, to mixed martial arts, taking just one victory in five fights since joining its ranks.
Boldenone, an anabolic steroid developed for veterinary use, particularly in the treatment of horses, is the same anabolic steroid that was found in Stephan Bonnar's urinalysis following his loss to Forrest Griffin in Aug. of last year. The NSAC suspended Bonnar for nine months.
After receiving the official NSAC complaint, which should be in his hands no later than Tuesday, Cope will have 20 days to respond.
