Three More Baseball Players Accused of Steroid Use

Three More Baseball Players Accused of Steroid Use

October 1, 2006

Former pitcher Jason Grimsley is being credited with accusing three more baseball stars of using performance-enhancing drugs.

The Los Angeles Times reports that in a federal affidavit Grimsley implicates Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Miguel Tejada as having used steroids. KCBS’ Doug Sovern spoke with San Jose Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy.

Purdy said the allegations alone do more damage to the game. "It's going to add another brick in this house of suspicion people have about sports in general and baseball in particular. It'll make people a little more leery and feeling a little less enthusiastic about standing up and applauding these games in general.”

The affidavit comes from the case against Grimsley, who is accused of taking human growth hormones. In June, federal agents searched his Arizona home after he admitted to using hormones, steroids and amphetamines.

The players have all denied the accusations, saying baseball’s drug testing proves they are clean. Clemens called the situation ridiculous, but Purdy said it doesn't seem so far fetched that the Rocket could have extended his career with steroids.

"Just by looking at Clemens and seeing the way his career has gone, it does raise some eyebrows."

Grimsley denies naming names at all, claiming the federal agent involved made it up.
