WASHINGTON Baseball Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey isn't sure Mark McGwire will be a shoo-in for next year's induction ceremony.
Petroskey was asked about McGwire and baseball's steroid problems during a question-and-answer session following a speech at the National Press Club today in Washington. He says the upcoming vote on McGwire's induction will be a good early test on how writers are feeling about players "when there's been some question about how they've performed and gotten their statistics."
Petroskey says the Hall will "wait and see" before deciding how to handle potential steroid users who become Hall-eligible. He added that the Mitchell committee looking into baseball's steroid use will reveal much more information over the next couple of years than we know today.
Petroskey also says the Hall is prepared to deal with steroid use, saying "no baseball fan will come up there and feel like they're being whitewashed."
