NFL Notes: Foley on steroids when shot?

NFL Notes: Foley on steroids when shot?

Prosecutors ask for blood sample Bush cashed in

September 15, 2006

San Diego prosecutors say they suspect Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was on steroids when he was shot three times by an off-duty police officer.

"His history of aggressive and even violent contact with law enforcement indicates the possibility of more than mere alcohol involvement," wrote criminal investigator Dan Nordell in an affidavit for a search warrant. "(Steroids) can cause erratic behaviour in those that use them. This has been given names like 'roid rage for the uncontrollable outbursts and violence experienced by some users.''

Yesterday, prosecutors requested a sample of Foley's blood from hospital. He was reported in fair condition earlier in the week.

The 31-year-old Foley, who is 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, was shot three times — twice in the back of the left leg and once on the outside of the left thigh — by an off-duty police officer Sept. 3.

JAGUAR PLEADS OUT: Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Brian Williams has pleaded no contest to drunken-driving charges, opening himself up to possible sanctions from the NFL.

Williams was arrested early Sept. 2 after his 2006 Bentley swerved toward a police car and caused the officer to hit a curb.

CADILLAC SIDELINED: Tampa Bay's Carnell (Cadillac) Williams sat out practice yesterday because of back spasms, however the Buccaneers expect the running back to play this week against Atlanta.

BUSH BENEFITS? New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush and his family appear to have accepted gifts, money and other benefits worth more than $100,000 from two marketing agents while the Heisman Trophy winner was still playing at Southern California, according to a report on Yahoo.com.

The report says Michael Michaels, a marketing agency investor who wanted to represent the football star, and current Bush marketing agent Mike Ornstein lavished Bush and his family with gifts while he was still at USC, each hoping to entice him to sign with them once he left school.

SPIKES DOUBTFUL: Bills linebacker Takeo Spikes missed his second day of practice yesterday with a pulled right hamstring, leaving his status in doubt for Buffalo's game at Miami this weekend. Spikes remains listed as questionable.

LUCKY DAY: In the largest payout for residential property acquired for the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, Arlington City Council agreed to give a 72-year-old woman $2.75 million (U.S.) for her house and four acres.

"I can buy something and stop living in my car," Evelyn Wray chuckled. "I've been basically living out of suitcases from here to there.''

Since moving out of her home in March, Wray said she's been staying with family and friends.

PHILLIPS IN COURT: Former NFLer Lawrence Phillips attempted to run over a group of boys with his car last year because he was upset about losing a pickup game, a prosecutor told jurors yesterday.

The 31-year-old Phillips faces seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon for driving a car onto a soccer field last year and injuring three boys.
