KC Trainer Denies Steroid Involvement

KC Trainer Denies Steroid Involvement

June 9, 2066

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The latest chapter in the story of steroids in baseball continues, with a local trainer saying he has done nothing wrong.

Trainer Chris Mihlfeld helped former Royals pitcher Jason Grimsley. This week, the baseball Web site Deadspin.com claimed Grimsley's former fitness trainer gave him a source for amphetamines.

Mihlfeld told KMBC's Micheal Mahoney that the report is not true.

"I never referred Jason Grimsley to any source for any illegal drugs," Mihlfeld said. "I have never been involved in anything with amphetamines, steroids or human growth hormones. Period."

Grimsley told investigators he started using steroids in 2000.

"Jason Grimsley did steroids in 2000. I met Jason until 2003, so how the hell did he get them in 2000?" Mihlfeld said.

In a federal affidavit that Grimsley gave in Arizona, there are blacked-out names in the 20-page document. It has led to speculation about current and former Major League Baseball players that may have been named as possible steroid users.

Mahoney said Mihlfeld has other connections beyond Grimsley. He also trains baseball stars Albert Pujols and the Royals' Mike Sweeney -- both of whom have been rumored to use steroids.

"These guys are the golden boys of baseball. Why are we trying to find things that they're doing wrong or that they're cheating? Because it's not true," Mihlfeld said.

"The only thing we're guilty of is having a great trainer. That's Chris Mihlfeld. And Albert told me to echo his thoughts as well," Sweeney said.

Mihlfeld defended all three baseball players, saying they're close friends.

"So, you're talking about my family now. And I do not believe that (Pujols) has done anything wrong. And I wish people would leave him alone and let him be great, because that's what he is," Mihlfeld said.

The trainer said Grimsley's attorney called him and told him that despite the Web site's claims, Mihlfeld's name does not appear in the federal report.
