Flowery Branch, GA (AHN) - The Atlanta Falcons will be without starting center Matt Lehr this Sunday after he was suspended four games on Tuesday for violating the league's steroid policy.
The name of the substance has not been revealed, but since it drew a four-game suspension, it indicates that it was Lehr's first failed test. A second failed test would have resulted in an eight-game suspension and the third would have kept him out for a year.
The 27-year-old will not be out of the lineup until Nov. 13.
Falcons coach Jim Mora said in a statement, "Obviously, we are disappointed, but the NFL's policies are very clear that all NFL players are responsible for what goes into their bodies -- regardless of the source. We have options to replace Matt over the next four weeks that we are very comfortable with."
The Falcons are expected to replace Lehr with either Austin King or Tyson Calbo, both whom have very little experience compared to Lehr. The offensive line had already been dealing without the services of another one of their top lineman, Kynan Forney who is resting a separated shoulder.
The Falcons have had great success running the football this season, but they've terrible inside the 20-yard line. Atlanta hasn't scored inside the red zone in their last 11 opportunities. The elusive Michael Vick hasn't even been able to dodge the defensive onslaught due to their porous line. He was sacked seven times in last week's loss to the Giants, and he's been sacked 18 times in five games this season.
According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lehr has the option to appeal the suspension, but will not be paid during the process.
The Falcons will go against the Steelers on Sunday.
