Teen athlete assists in steroid probe
Teen athlete assists in steroid probe, By: Sylvain Metz
A high school football player got a pass on Friday for cooperating with the police.
Jared Foster, 18, who was arrested Nov. 11 on two counts of alcohol possession by a minor and 13 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, had his charges remanded for two years because he has been cooperating with police in a steroid investigation.
Police came to the Madison Central star quarterback's home following neighbors' complaints of a loud party. Authorities found a substance "purported" to be steroids following a search of the premises. Crime lab tests have not yet identified the substance.
Each count represents each 16 and 17 year old at the party.
Following his arrest, Foster cooperated with police, which resulted in the arrest of a juvenile who attempted to sell a "controlled substance" to an undercover officer. More arrests are possible, Police Chief Gene Waldrop said.
Although Waldrop said the substance the juvenile attempted to sell has not yet been identified, Sgt. Robert Sanders, who manages the department's narcotics unit, told Madison Municipal Judge Ed Hannan that the drug was steroids.
Foster's attorney, Tommy Savant, told Hannan that while Foster provided the location for the party, he did not provide the beer or alcohol found at the party.
Savant said Foster brought some friends home that evening which resulted in other underage teens showing up with their own alcohol.
All those teens were picked up by their parents, police said.
As far as steroid use is concerned, Savant said emphatically that "Jared Foster has not made use of steroids." He would not comment on the substance found in Foster's home.
"We don't have any comment on what was found at the house. The situation as it stands ... is an ongoing investigation," he said.
Satisfied that the city had the situation well in hand, Hannan agreed to remand Foster's sentence for two years provided that the teen maintain good behavior - no alcohol or drugs - and continue to cooperate with authorities in the steroid investigation.
Foster's father, Lance Foster, told Hannan that he preached "weekly" to his two sons about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, which he said are not allowed in any of his three homes.
What's more, Lance Foster said he further counselled his son against having people over when he was not home. His son's arrest, therefore, was "terribly shocking" and embarrassing to the family.
"His punishment from me will be very severe," Lance Foster said.
Jared Foster transferred to Madison Central this year from Canton Academy. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound Foster is a Clarion-Ledger Top 125 Senior and was a key player on an MC team that went 8-4 this season. The Jaguars' season ended with a 14-10 loss at Olive Branch last month in the Class 5A playoffs.
