High school athletes would be randomly tested for steroids and subject to suspension from competition if a Senate bill passed out of committee Tuesday becomes law.
But the bill, sponsored by Sen. Durell Peaden, a Crestview Republican, faces an uphill battle. It has four more committee stops before the full body could consider it, and the session ends in two and half weeks.
Peaden, a physician, said dangerous side effects to steroid use mean testing is needed to discourage it.
Steroids can enhance athletic performance, but use has been linked to cancer and other health problems, particularly for still-developing adolescents.
''If we could save one life, it would be worth it,'' Peaden said.
The bill's House sponsor has already offered a narrower version in the hopes of getting something passed this year.
