Glenn Jacobs asked World Wrestling Entertaiment to donate money to a local charity after he was elected mayor. WWE CEO Vince McMahon jumped at the opportunity to support Kane.
Glenn Jacobs, the WWE superstar who goes by the ring name “Kane”, promised to use his connections in professional wrestling to benefit the community if he was elected the mayor of Knox County. And now that he is in office, he is busy fulfilling those promises.
Jacobs asked WWE chief executive officer Vince McMahon to consider donating money to the Knoxville Public Safety Foundation. McMahon did not hesitate to pull out his corporate checkbook.
"We're happy to support this charity of behalf of Mayor Jacobs," McMahon said a WWE press release published in September 2018. “Much like his unparalleled contributions to advancing the WWE brand during his stellar career of more than 20 years, Mayor Jacobs has begun work to improve Knox County."
Anti-steroid activist sees WWE donation as dirty steroid money.
WWE announced plans to donate $100,000 to the local non-profit in January 2019. The Knoxville Public Safety Foundation assists first responders if they have been involved any serious accident, injury, death or other life-changing events.
The foundation provides family benefits to employees of the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), the Knox County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), the Knoxville Fire Department (KFD) and the University of Tennessee Police Department (UTPD).
Most people would see this as a very good thing for everyone involved. But not Protect Our Youth from Steroids (POYS) founder Al Thompson.
Thompson considers the donation to be dirty money generated by an organization that profited off the rampant use of anabolic steroid, human growth hormone and painkillers by its performers. As such, Thompson has asked the Knoxville Public Safety Foundation to refuse the money.
Thompson also criticized Jacobs for continuing to work for the WWE while he was mayor of Knoxville County. Jacobs is reportedly paid $900,000 per year as a WWE performer in addition to his $180,000 per year salary as Knoxville County mayor.
But by most accounts, Jacobs continued employment by the WWE is reaping benefits for the community of Knoxville. In addition to securing $100,000 for local first responders, Jacobs has helped arrange the return of WWE Live to Knoxville in January 2019.
The anti-steroid Thompson is probably one of the few people who have a problem with Jacobs performance as mayor.
