Drug Smuggler on Air India Flight to Thailand Arrested with Quarter Million Dollars Worth of Steroids

The India Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a man involved in an international steroid smuggling ring at an airport just before he planned to leave the country. The man was scheduled to fly to Thailand to buy anabolic steroids on behalf of the drug smuggling syndicate.

The man was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as he prepared to board an Air India flight to Bangkok on the night of November 23, 2018. The flight was scheduled to arrive at the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport on the following day in the early morning hours.

DRI investigators discovered that the man had various foreign currencies worth the equivalent of 12.8 million Indian Rupees (or approximately $180,000 USD) in his possession. The primary foreign included the Euro and the British Pound.

The man admitted working as an agent for the steroid smuggling ring. He was tasked with purchasing steroids in Thailand and bringing them back to India without declaring them to customs officials. The currency in his possession was intended to be used to buy more steroids.

The man provided DRI investigators with information about a massive quantity of anabolic steroids in his possession valued at over 20 million Indian rupees (or approximately $280,000 USD).

 The would-be steroid smuggler was only caught after a tipster alerted law enforcement officers to his plan. The identity of the tipster was not reported. However, there is a good chance that it was an unscrupulous competitor.

The DRI is the primary anti-drug smuggling intelligence and investigations agency in India. The agency recently received a surplus of funds intended to put a stop to the “menace” of steroid smugglers.
