Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence will likely miss important playoff game due to failed drug test.
Dexter Lawrence, a top-ranked defensive tackle for the University of Clemson Tigers football team, may end his collegiate career on a decidedly anti-climactic note after testing positive for a prohibited substance. Lawrence tested positive for a selective androgen receptor modular (SARM) called Ostarine in the days prior to an important playoff game.
Lawrence was one of three Clemson football players who were found to have Ostarine present during an analysis of the “A samples”. The two players were offensive lineman Zach Giella and tight end Braden Galloway.
If the “B sample” confirms the presence of Ostarine, it is likely than all of the players will be sanctioned. The penalty for a first-time anti-doping violation in the NCAA is a period of ineligibility for one year.
“Sliver” of Ostarine could have come from hair products or dietary supplements according to Clemson head coach.
Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney did his best to minimize the Ostarine positive drug test. There was only a “sliver” of Ostarine detected in the players urine samples according to Swinney.
Swinney indicated that all three players were innocent of intentional doping violations. The head coach implied that the failed drug tests resulted from inadvertent doping with the use of contaminated products. He did not know how the Ostarine ended up in any of the players’ systems but claimed it could have come from contaminated hair products or protein powders.
Lawrence has long been considered one of the best defensive lineman in NCAA football. From the moment he left high school, he was considered the number 2 overall recruit in the NCAA class of 2017. He was named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016. And he was named to the First Team All-ACC in 2018.
Lawrence could very well end his college career without playing another game. This will be a huge disappointment for the Clemson Tigers in their quest to reach the College Football Playoff National Championship game. Lawrence previously helped Clemson win the 2017 CFP National Championship over the University of Alabama.
Regardless of the outcome of the Ostarine positive, Lawrence will remain one of the top overall prospects in the National Footbal League (NFL) draft. Prior to the announcement of the Ostarine positive, Lawrence was expected to be among the top 20 overall picks and the top 10 defensive picks.
